Actually,  the photographs are spaced ten years apart, not sixteen.

1912 to 1922.

The young, homeless (but no less dapper) wanderer shown in the first survived the sinking of the Titanic and swam to the shores of West Egg. There he built a life and a large, empty house, in an effort to win the heart of the wealthy, upper class woman he’d fallen in love with a decade earlier and had been separated from against his will.

He shed his earlier identity, and changed his name to reflect his new station. Jack was now known as Jay Gatsby, the eccentric millionaire who threw parties every night in the hopes that one day his love would show up and spin with him as they had long ago in the dance hall of the lower decks.

#and he still ends up dead floating in the water

holy shit

And then, at the beginning of Inception, he starts out washed up on a shore.

still no oscar

Leo’s entire film career of unrelated projects has better continuity than glee.

First attempt at making bread! It’s looks a bit like a spaceship in my opinion. I’ve linked the recipe I used :)

Buddha Park

Buddha Park, also known as Spirit City (Xieng Khuan), is a sculpture park located 25 km southeast of Vientiane, a small city that sits along the Mekong River in Laos. The park was started in 1958 by Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat who was a priest-shaman. The park displays over 200 Buddhist and Hindu statues of deities, along with other beautifully carved strange figures. The main attraction is the giant reclining Buddha resting on the grass (first photo).

I must go here one day.

[Image description: A photograph of a manatee in the sea, facing the camera. TEXT: “You can’t change people. Sometimes you will do everything right, and it won’t help. It’s hard to accept, but people have to want to change and you can’t force that. Do what you can, but remember to take care of yourself first.”]

There are going to be people in your life who need help. And while I think you should help them as best you can, that’s the key to it: as best you can. At the end of the day, you’re a person. You can provide support and love, but not change. That’s up to them.

And sometimes it’s going to reach a point where you can’t help anymore without hurting yourself. And when that happens, you have to step back and look after yourself too. You are your own first priority.

I wish there was an easy way to know when to keep fighting for something and when you should move on. Because I don’t want to move on. I just want it to be real for once.

Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?

The answer is NO.

The “fact” that junk food is cheaper than real food has become a reflexive part of how we explain why so many Americans are overweight, particularly those with lower incomes. I frequently read confident statements like, “when a bag of chips is cheaper than a head of broccoli …” or “it’s more affordable to feed a family of four at McDonald’s than to cook a healthy meal for them at home.”

(via sunfoundation)

this bullshit fills me with a very specific kind of rage. so, TIME TO DEBUNK!

  1. that meal from mcdonalds takes virtually no time to acquire AND is available almost anywhere.
  2. the second meal? that “salad” is lettuce … with nothing else, not even dressing unless its just olive oil or some milk i guess? gross.
  3. also thats the price of each serving, not an entire loaf of bread, a bottle of olive oil, etc. that stuff adds up which means you have to have a lot of money at one time to buy it all.
  4. that meal probably took an hour and a half to make, which is a long fucking time when you work multiple jobs or are caring for a lot of people or dont have help! seriously, if you are a single parent of three who works, is spending an hour and a half every night preparing a meal a likely option?
  5. same with beans and rice! also, you know whats a fucking bummer? eating beans and rice every night because you are poor. ask any person who has done it and they will tell you (you can start with me).
  6. there is a “nutrition” argument here that lacks a follow up: poor people are more likely to be doing physical labor and need more than 571 calories per meal.
  7. you know who is less likely to know how to bake or prepare a chicken? people without access to the internet, or libraries, or who werent taught how to by their parents because their parents worked all the time. access to healthy foods is a classist issue and classism is cyclical, you fucking morons.
  8. seriously, these sorts of infographics make me want to fucking flip tables. do you know why people don’t eat more fresh fruits and vegetables? because fresh fruits and vegetables are expensive, because they take a long time to prepare, because they dont live near a grocery store that has a decent produce section, because they dont have reliable transportation to get groceries to and from the grocery store, because they dont have the energy to plan all of the shit that is involved in making healthy, intentional, filling, balanced meals. basically: poor people get fucked, and then we get BLAMED for being lazy.
  9. eating “healthy”, aka access to fresh fruits and vegetables, is a privilege, first, foremost, always. so fuck you new york times and your ignorant goddamn infographic.
  10. there are SYSTEMATIC REASONS that we do not have equal access to fresh fruits and vegetables. they are very REAL problems. besides, you know, systematic poverty in america, the total mis-distribution of farm subsidies is a perfect place to start. read about that, then either get bent or start working on the actual problem.

Exactally

I COMPLETELY disagree with this commentary. Can’t you see how wrong this is? When you are low on money you save money when you make your own food and do not eat out at sit down or fast food. I’ve been living on less than $30 per week and I do NOT need to eat McDonald’s. Break out of your traditional foods and think about what can feed a lot and will last a long time. When you are on hard times you don’t always get what you like or want but you can still feed your body the fuel that it needs and not something that will poison you and get you health problems. Most ethnic markets I’ve been to have better and cheaper produce than krogers or Walmart. Check yourself and stop making excuses. Care for yourself and your family and give yourself what you deserve. That doesn’t mean you need to go out and buy everything organic and it doesn’t mean you need salad dressing on your salad.
Fruits take NO time to prepare and what are you doing to your vegetables? You can steam them, roast them, or cook them stove top and none of those should take more than 30-40 minutes. And seriously, the things that are EXPENSIVE and take a long time to prepare and cook are meats. NOT fruits and vegetables.
